ECGRR, Animal Planet, and American Lab Rescue Print E-mail

As a courtesy to American Lab Rescue, ECGRR posted on their website a young blind lab for adoption. Her name is Kali Gold.   In just a matter of days she was adopted by a sweet caring couple up north.  The transportation that took Kali Gold up north was the very same transport company that is now featured on the Animal Planet channel titled "Last Chance Highway."  Below is the story told by the new adoptive family.

Update 7-24-2010:

HI Sandi

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that we picked up Kali this morning.  And you were right, it was an emotional morning :)  I don't think I slept at all last night, so worried I'd oversleep.  The transport was about 45 mins late; I cried when it pulled into the lot. Dennis cried when they brought Kali off the truck.  She was eager to go as soon as her feet hit the ground.  After a brief walk and some water, we got into the nicely air conditioned car for the 1 hour trip back home.  It is brutal here today...very hot, very humid.

When we got home, we took Kali over to met our neighbor and then a quick trip thru the backyard.  With a little help, she went up the back stairs into the house.  I walked her around the kitchen, dining room and living room and as soon as she found the dog bed, she laid down.  She knows 'come' very well.  When I asked her if she wanted water, she perked up and so I said, ok Kali, come.  And, sure enough she followed me back over to her water bowl.  She also found the toy bucket and decided that the tennis ball was hers.  So, that along with a nylobone are now in her bed.

We went for another short walk around 2pm, but it's so hot, we didn't go for long.  She and the cats haven't met yet but my big grey cat is sleeping on the other side of the living room so I think he's ok with the fact there's a new dog here.  For having had what I'm sure were a couple of stressful days, Kali is doing quite well I'd say.

Talk to you soon!

Noelle

Update 7-27-2010:

Hi Sandi,

Update on Kali....She slept last night in the bedroom on her dog bed.  First time since we brought her home.  The first couple nights, she slept on the couch.  The night before last, we tried to get her to sleep in the bedroom, but it was clear she wasn't comfortable so I slept out in the living room with her.  But, last night, we had a successful full night in the bedroom.  Well, I can't say I slept thru the night.  I kept waking up to make sure she was ok.

We're taking 3 short walks a day.  Trying to build up to longer walks.  Kali seems to tire out after one loop around the no outlet street.  We're hoping to take her up to the park this weekend.

She's going to the vet tomorrow to be micro-chipped and for a quick check up.  I noticed that she has a back tooth that looks very brown.  Did you notice that?  The gum at the top of the tooth looks a little red, so we're going to have the vet check that.  Maybe she just needs it scrapped.

The cats are getting braver.  The kitten got very close to Kali this morning.  Kali just smelled, didn't seem startled.  We're amazed at how low key she is.

I'm attaching a picture Dennis took this morning.  I was talking to Kali and she just looked so happy :) She gets very excited when we put her harness on.  That's the indication that we're going for a walk!

Well, that's the update for today.

Take care,

Noelle
