ECGRR Alumni Polo visited Dog Daze |
|
|
| ECGRR, My wife Jenny and I along with our Golden boy and ECGRR alumni, Polo visited your both at the 2009 Dog Daze event in Fort Walton Beach. We met Kandie and she asked us to submit an update on Polo, who we adopted in 2001. We are very happy to have met Kandie because she is such a nice lady, and we saw Bob Teer, who fostered Polo before he came home with us. It was nice reconnecting if only for a short while. Polo had a great time as well because it was his first outing in a while. |
Dog Daze at the Fort Walton Beach Landing, Oct. 17, 2009 Unkown, Polo (center), Polo's dad petting Zoey | | In mid August, Jenny and I noticed Polo limping so we made an appointment to see his doctor, DVM Andrew Brightman of Brightman Pet Clinic in Shalimar, FL. |
Polo Oct. 17, 2009 Dog Daze | We were devastated as Doc B explained to us how Polo’s limp was due to pain from a bone tumor, which he believed was cancer, specifically, osteosarcome. We understood two words the most, cancer and amputate. We were also very concerned since Polo is now a senior citizen.
Polo, Mom and Pete (Rocco in background) | A biopsy confirmed Doc B’s diagnosis and we spoke about options: One, amputate his leg or manage what will become excruciating pain with drugs until it weakens and snaps, and two, undergo chemo therapy or allow the cancer to take its course. Polo is our son so these decisions came quickly—we’re doing everything we can for him. | | On Sep 29th his front left leg was amputated. He stayed overnight after surgery but Doc B told us everything went very well. After a very long night, Doc B called to let us know Polo was standing on his own, had gone outside to do some “business”, and had no mental hang-ups what so ever. We were very relieved and happy with that news—elated! Later that day I went to picked him up. After receiving instructions and a question/answer session, Polo drug me out the door. Doc B followed us out to help me load him in the car(the “Big Dog” weighs 105lbs). I drive a Honda Element and when I let the tailgate down, Polo jumped right in. Doc B and I looked at each other with guilt for allowing that to happen, but we surely didn’t expect that—it was a proud father moment. |
Polo shortly after surgery in 2009
Polo and Zoey at the 2009 Dog Daze | Polo continued to surprise us as the days passed. Three days after surgery he was laying in his favorite sun spot in the back yard, by day 7 he ran up the stairs (I helped him down) and by day 10 we were taking small walks, just a couple of lawns down and back. The week before Dog Daze, Doc B removed his stitches and Polo was ready to venture out. His recovery so far has been excellent—we couldn’t ask for better. Every time he goes outside, he runs to the gate and says, “Let’s Go!” | | Polo still has fight ahead. His cancer may have spread through the marrow to his blood and can go anywhere. He starts chemo next week. No one told Polo he’s missing a leg and we intend to take things as they come with that same positive attitude. We’re following his lead. Polo has brought us so much happiness and love and we are so grateful to ECGRR for bringing him into our lives. Mike, Jenny and Polo Jones |
Polo at the 2009 Dog Daze, Fort Walton Beach Landing, Oct. 17th | | We all should learn from this story about love and devotion. Everyone who volunteers for ECGRR would like to thank Mike and Jenny Jones for giving Polo the best home, love and life he could ever ask for. No one could do more for Polo than the Jones'. May you be blessed in every way for your loving heart and compassionate spirit.
