The American Cancer Society and BARC! Print E-mail

The American Cancer Society and the Baldwin County Humane Society (BARC!) are collaborating on the first "BARC! For A Cure" in Baldwin County on September 19, 2009 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

"BARC! For A Cure" honors the care giving qualities of our canine friends while raising money for lifesaving cancer research and services for cancer patients.

This fun family event includes a 1 mile walk through the beautiful wooded path at Loxley Municipal Park (1½ miles south of I-10 on Hwy 59 in Loxley, AL.) Regardless of whether you have a dog, everyone is welcome to attend the event.

The day will be filled with lots of passion and purpose, people and pets barking and walking to raise money for two very worthy causes. All proceeds raised at the event will be split between BARC! and American Cancer Society and will remain in the local AL Gulf Coast communities.

Vendors will be on hand with gifts and information for pets and people including training, pet sitting, grooming, pet foods, people gifts, spay/neuter, pet therapy, cool tee shirts and more!

You can honor or remember a beloved pet in the Pet Photo Contest. Bring any size picture of your pet and donate $5. A People's Choice Award will be chosen.

BARC! is having a pet adoption and Dr. Schindler of Eastern Shore Animal Hospital will conduct a rabies and microchip clinic. There will be agility and obedience demonstrations including Canine Good Citizen by an American Kennel Club Evaluator.

Unleash your passion and build a powerful pack! Grab your friends, 2-legged and 4, to form a team. The team that raises the most money will win the coveted Dog With The Biggest Bone award. Registration is $10 per dog/person. Register your team today by downloading the form at www.baldwinhumane.org

The $10 donation entitles your dog to participate in the walk, the Fido Fashion Show, Best Trick Contest and awards for biggest dog, smallest dog and best owner/pet look-a-like.

  • 8:00 a.m. Registration and social time starts
  • 9:00 a.m. Opening ceremony with Blessing of the Pets followed by the Cancer Surviror/Caregiver Lap (Canines who are cancer survivors, canine owners who are cancer survivors and canine owners who are caregivers to a cancer survivor will show the extraordinary bond people share with their pets)
  • 9:30 a.m. the 1-mile dog walk will be led by Willie Bean in his first official duty as Honorary BARC! Board Member
  • 11:00 a.m. BARC! For A Cure concludes with a check presentation to BARC! and the American Cancer Society

Kim Bertagnolli, American Cancer Society Community Representative in Fairhope, remarked “There's been a lot of interest in having a separate canine fundraiser from the Relay for Life events. The American Cancer Society even has Best Practices for it.”

Vendor booths are available for $10. If you are interested in having a booth or being a volunteer, contact Sonja Presley, Event Coordinator, at or 251-591-4837.

For the entire schedule of events or to download registration form, pet photo contest entry form or vendor booth application, visit www.baldwinhumane.org or call the BARC! Office at 251-928-4585. Event day registrations will be accepted.
